Growing up in humble beginnings in Hill and Queen Cross Street in Christiansted, St. Croix, attending Pearl B. Larsons Elementary, and then graduating from St. Dunstans Episcopal School in 1987, Jennifer Matarangas-King’s life exemplifies achievement and manifesting one’s destiny. During her time as a student on the collegiate level Jennifer took advantage of many disciplines such as statistics, organizational communication, psychology, economics, language, and literature; which in the end she explains has made her a better leader in the business world. “One of the major problems people have in business is that they assume they just have to understand the numbers. However, I find the opposite is the case, where one has to understand the people to succeed. Taking the varied courses I did in college allowed me to better understand the group dynamics in business.” Jennifer took full advantage of internship opportunities in her college years, one at US News and World Report as a Media Intern where she met many of the modern-day news personalities like Steve Roberts, David Gergen, and Wolf Blitzer. Another internship she credits her experience to was as a Project Consultant for the Center for Applied Research, which is funded by the prestigious Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania. Please don’t get it mixed up the woman also worked as a waitress at the Buccaneer Hotel in St. Croix and part-time customer service representative at Nordstrom in Washington D.C. for extra money in graduate school at Howard University; she is a hustler to say the least.

Mrs. Matarangas-King came on board with the Innovative Corporation in January 1999, as a Project Coordinator and worked her way up the ladder. During her time as Director of Business Offices, she feels she gained the most of experience. “In my entire career at Innovative, that has been the most important experience builders in my career. In that role I got to deal with the actual day-to-day operations of the company, meaning provisioning of service, dealing with customers, and seeing the gears work.” She goes on, “I see myself more as a Project Manager more than anything, even with my labels as President or General Manager. My strengths are seeing a project all the way through, beginning, middle, and end.” Her knowledge of the customer base, understanding of how the company operates, and her work ethic made Jennifer the prime candidate for the position of President of Innovative Cable Television.
You have seen her in front of the cameras as well, her involvement with the Caribbean Channel, Tempo, is an affiliation she is proud of and will continue supporting. Jennifer is a childhood friend of Frederick Morton Jr. known as “Junie” to those familiar, Chairman and CEO of Tempo. She grew up in a house across the street from a shop Mr. Morton’s parents owned. In the time after their college years both were on very different and distinct paths, she was getting into consulting and Frederick was working as a corporate lawyer for MTV Networks, a subsidiary of the media giant Viacom. In 2005, after becoming President and General Manager and being out of touch for a while, Jennifer decided to try and contact “Junie” after seeing an article in the newspaper concerning an award he was receiving. Upon reuniting the years of displacement disappeared, they talked about family, jobs, and a project that Frederick was working on. Without hesitation, Jennifer got on board and utilized her already bountiful wealth of experience to make Tempo a reality. Her passion for the channel and its success is clear, and her role in its operation is critical.
This is but scratching the surface on the phenomenon that is Jennifer Matarangas-King. With the changes coming about in both the enterprises she is involved in Innovative Cable and Tempo, Jennifer will rise to the occasion utilizing her broad experience and strong Cruzian determination, believing all things are possible.
...one has to understand the people to succeed...
