SMOKEY B
THE PRODIGY

By: supah
From Our Nov - Dec 2007 Issue

Wanted by street demand:

·  An artist from the Virgin Islands

·  Must be up and coming, but have some hot tunes already under his belt

·  Defends his turf lyrically, and everyone still can relate to what’s going on

·  Versatility is a must

·  Always ready to drop something wicked on the spot off the top

A lot of MC's may fit the description above, but only one man can take the credit for bringing us tunes like 'Jah Love', 'Numero Uno', and 'Vatty Man Nasty'(done know)  Big man told me he's been chanting and rapping since school days. Now he spends most of the time in the studio getting his wordplay up.  We saddled up everything and headed to the East to check this man out in Old TuTu. Old TuTu is one of my favorite spots in the East because some of my good brethrens became legends either on the Al McBean field or on the basketball court. It’s a guarantee that you can find a game going on there and I sat there and was enjoying the game until I was approached by my friend Ali. He introduced me to the man and right away big man just start up,"Its Smokey B, not jokey b!" Well we had to hold a side bar and move from the bleachers over to the tennis court, thats where we began interviewing with Smokey B.

CORE:  As far back as you can remember, how did you get into the music?

Smokey B: "It started out that I used to sing back over stuff that was on the radio, because I could alter my voice to sound exactly like whoever it was, and then my friends encouraged me to write my own songs, and the vibe kept building.

CORE: What inspires you when you’re developing your songs?

Smokey B: "My environment! I get alot of strength from these man I live around, and all I do is put rhythm and rhymes together of what we do and how we feel, you know. For example, 'Jah Love' was inspired by Nyorah after I dealt with him on a vibes, the words came easy, you know."

CORE: You have a few street anthems out already, anything coming soon?

Smokey B: "Yeah, we haven't put a date on the release but I have a mixtape CD and an album ready to drop, just check me on my Hi-5 page and my MySpace page for more info."

Core: Is there anything you'll like to tell younger artists that helped you along your musical route?

Smokey B: "Yea man, stay focused! Figure out what you love doing, no matter what it is, and stick with it. I know it sound old and everyone says it but IT TRUE! Stick with it and pursue it to the heights, along the way some people may approach you with all kind of bogus but once you focus you going get where you need to be,seen?!" Yes I and I want to say Give Thanks to CORE Magazine, pure magazine, for the caribbean! Check these man web site if you want to see your boy S-Bizzle flowing live!"

All I do is put rhythm and rhymes together from what we do and how we feel
