The “Streets of
St. Croix
” Mix Tape evolved out of a collaboration between the VIGs, Krime Fam and DJS Entertainment. Hosted by DJ Slik of Isle95 (95.1FM), the reality rap mix gives outsiders an in depth view of what it means to be from the streets of the big island. Its predecessor “17 Shots”, with its controversial lyrics, was very popular causing listeners to want more. With the cooperation of fifteen (15) multi-talented rappers, a guest appearance by De Apostle and many 20 hour days later, the mix tape release was an instant success. Tracks like “Streets of St. Croix”, “Lick Dem Down” and “Flow” received the most radio play. DJ Slik sat down with CORE to explain how the “Streets of St. Croix” release is breathing new life into rap.
CORE: For those who haven’t heard the mix tape as yet, how would you describe the feel of the compilation?
DJ Slik: People who aren’t from the streets are able to see the real side of this island, sort of the darker side of
St. Croix
. For example the title track starts off like this: “you know you home when you see the pot hoes and smell the weed in the air”. Its something people can relate to plus its quality music. We also touch on issues affecting the territory like the high murder rate.
CORE: How do you respond to critics who just dismiss the mix as negative because its gangster rap?
DJ Slik: A lot of people take a blind eye to the problems in the streets. Rapping I san outlet for most of the young men involved in the project. Instead of taking it to the streets they take it to the recording booth. We don’t expect everyone to like ganster rap since that’s not the main music of our people but we consider ourselves pioneers for the rap industry here. We just rap about our life our reality. I usually ask the critics if they know how long it takes to do a CD and to put it out. To me it keeps the young men involve from becoming idle.
