YOUNGEST VETERAN

By: supah
From Our Apr. - May 2008 Issue

He calls himself St.Thomas’ youngest veteran. Rafijah has been performing for audiences since the age of 14, and his readiness to expel something musically shows it. Rafijah, he told me was a stage name that came to him in a vision.” I consider it to be a wisdom child”, and no one is questioning his musical genius. Among the songs he’s know for, (the ones that play on the radio) Rafijah is also a multitalented musician. He plays the trumpet, guitar, and the keyboards. Then he’ll switch it up and sing and chant in Spanish! We linked up with Rafijah and he told us where to find him in Contant, I have to admit I wasn’t familiar with the area, but as soon as we got there and we let some youths who were on the basketball court know we’re here to do a interview with Rafijah, they got me up to the time quickly. While the youths were explaining to me that they call their neighborhood “West Cloud”, Rafijah came bouncing in a full suit of khaki and a huge smile, he said” ah ha I see you done meet my brethren dem”, “ Well this is me you know a product of my environment.”

The interview started in Contant then we packed it up and ended out at Jah Corn’s truck in Nadir. We were meet there By Judah. The two of them gave us back to back tune free styling and singing to instrumentals, wow we definitely have video footage of everything, check them at our myspace page. After the excitement we all sat and reasoned, I enjoyed a small plate of tofu from Jah Corn, Rafijah was rocking back and forth on a stool still hyped from chanting, I asked him,” Get us familiar with Rafijah Siano,” he sat up and said, “ Yeah man, I was born here in St.Thomas, my parents are Puerto Rican and Santo Dominican, I went to C A H S, and music is my life!” I then asked him what caused him to love reggae and to be a reggae artist coming from the Virgin Islands? He leaned back and responded confidently, “My brother! Victor Fahie A.K.A Tewagi. I used to see him free styling all the time as a youth, so it was nothing for me to get into it.”

Core: We know you’re an original member of the Star Lion Family, tell us how did you all get together?

Rafijah replied saying, “We were all solo artist from different areas on St.Thomas but we were affiliated to Black juice Records, being familiar with each other around the studio made it easy to forward as a unit. Yeah man the seven brothers of Star Lion Family gave each other strength.”

Core: Tell us about any recent work you’ve done.

Rafijah: “Well most recently I opened for Beres Hammond, and I had a ball! My brother Icarus and I recorded “Time for Love”, that plays on the radio now.”

Core: So, what can we expect from Rafijah musically in the future?

Rafijah: “I goin’ take it to the next level! “

I then asked him about his take on the business from an artists’ view, he basically said, “you make hits and your gonna have a run. You are as hot as the last tune you drop!

Then I asked him if he was signed to any label, he sat back and grinned. He said,” I don’t need a punchline, cause the truth is done fine, I’m a veteran in my young prime still unsigned, fire I fling show them I’m not confined, I must shine, with my soldiers on the frontline… Spectacular!

CORE:  I asked, “How can we get in contact with you?

Rafijah: raphael_siano@yahoo.com

Core: Any one you’ll like to shout out?

Rafijah: “Yeah, big up my youths Rafijah Jr., Sanijah Destiny, and Efijah, big up V.I.C.I. From Bordeaux to Red Hook the V.I. is ours and this all we geh! Big up the youths considered to be products of their environment; Jah has given us the greatest gift of choice. Make yours wisely! “

You are as hot as the last tune you drop!
