From Our Apr. - May 2008 Issue

The phenomenon known as Avalanche is a familiar voice to morning commuters and those at work, also to anyone who goes out to high profile events here in the Virgin Islands. If you haven’t heard of DJ Avalanche you have been under a rock pretty much and are out of touch with local happenings. Growing up on both the Rock and the big island of Santa Cruz, he has the experience and knowledge of playing what the massive wants. We talk with the Dj concerning his beginnings, motivations and future plans.

CORE: Where did you learn the art of being a DJ?

Avalanche: I have always been into music, and the sound culture was really heavy at the time I was living in St. Croix with Dogheart and Heavyweight. I came into a little money and decided to get into the game by buying my own turntables. Learning on old school belt driven turntables, I learned how to mix in the original DJ format. Once you can mix on those you mix with anything. My friends and I including some of the founders of Most Wanted Promotion used to clash in the neighborhood where we lived trying to gain more experience.

CORE: Where did the advent of you being on the radio begin?

Avalanche: Linking with members of Red Lion in the late 90’s we realized getting on the air would take us to the next level and make an impact in the community. It wasn’t until three or four years ago that I was able to make that move. I always set goals for myself and I knew that would be the natural evolution. I have learned many things by being on the air in regards to the trends and directions of peoples’ musical likings. It has also been a time for me to see where my career can go such as syndication, podcasting, internet and satellite radio.

CORE: Differentiating between being a Dj and Radio Personality, do you prefer one over the other?

Avalanche: They both have their benefits in different ways. Music is such a powerful force and allows the massive to forget their troubles, invokes emotions. Being Radio or club; fulfilling peoples’ musical needs is satisfying to me.

CORE: What has been your driving force?

Avalanche: Simply put, it is my love for the music. Sometimes people get into the industry with the wrong motives chasing after the dollar. It is a business, but in order to be successful one has to have the desire and love for pleasing the massive. Stay focused, learn your trade, study the art and success will come naturally.
