RASH ON THE RADIO

Do you remember how the ridiculous spoof “One Snack Can’t Satisfy Her” on the popular I-Wayne tune made you laugh out loud?

Isle95’s morning shows have always been known for their spoofs since the days of Robert Luke and over two decades into the game they have managed to continue their quirky tradition. Classic spoofs and skits like the “bedroom quadrille” have earned Rashidi Clenance, the current host of “The Big Phat Morning Show”, several calls from tickled radio listeners asking for more.  But apart from all the fun, games and complete utter insanity on the radio, Rashidi has garnered much respect and accolades for his community projects off the air.

The host of one of the hottest shows on radio today in the Virgin Islands has always had a fascination for radio, but it wasn’t until in high school, after a long time friend, Mike Johnson, received a job at Isle95, that Rashidi began to see radio as an attainable goal.  An 8th year veteran of radio Rashidi has done it all; from sports reporting for the VI Daily News, the St. Croix Avis, WSTX and TV2 to hosting his own show on WTJX.

When asked about his position as a role model for youths Rashidi’s reply was “I try to do as much as I can do for the community.  Every opportunity that I get to speak to kids in school I take it.”   And he does just that by emceeing at various school events for free.

His commitment to the community goes far beyond the airwaves, somewhat an ad-hoc youth leader Rashidi has lead many efforts to increase youth-oriented events and sponsorship for various causes.  An ambitious guy in nature, Rashidi is also a tried and true entrepreneur who launched many ventures including a T-shirt design company, a Barber Shop, and an independent marketing consultant/commercial production company.

His most notable business is Sunstroke Promotions a promotional company that focuses on both music entertainment and sporting events.  Sunstroke entertainment roster includes such acts like:  TOK, Kevin Little, Merciless, Kid Capri, Jazzy Joyce, Jam Band and its annual Graduation Party.  The two most reputable events are:  The Fish and Fungi Charter and the annual Baller’s Weekend.  Both of which started to honor the accomplishments of Virgin Islands athletes like his best friend Tim Duncan.

The 5th annual Baller’s Weekend took place in July of 2006 and has had a pretty impressive roster of athletes since its inception in 2001.  Tim Duncan, Raja Bell, David Vanterpool and Hanik Milligan have all made appearances at this event which seeks to tie-in entertainment, sports and fundraising for youth-focused initiatives.  Rashidi spoke about his reasoning for the event stating that he “wanted to show the youths successful Virgin Islanders and as a former sports reporter [he] chose athletes.”

Rashidi Clenance is a 1993 graduate of St. Joseph High School St. Croix where he has since been chosen as a 2003 Hall of frame Alumni honoree.   You can hear Rash on the Radio every weekday from 6am to 9am on 95.1 FM.
