BOSCO
BEAT DOWN BEATS

By: kaya.lah
From Our Nov - Dec 2007 Issue

Beat-Down Beats is comprised solely of Kwane ‘Bosco’ Bartlett. Much like the beat factories in the states, Trackmasters and Dark Child, Beat-Down puts forth a barrage of quality tracks that light up the air waves. Teaming up with hot artist and up-stairs neighbor in Ras Valley, Rock City; Rancho in 2005, the tandem has been applying the pressure since.

Bosco has been involved in the VI music scene since the age of 18, playing in all major bands in the Virgin Islands. From Imaginations, Milo and the Kings to the Violators and the Wrecking Crew, Seventeen + and Jamband, his musical and industry experience cannot be questioned. Before linking up with Rancho, Bosco was creating heavy reggae tracks for Pressure, Rafijah, Niyorah, Apostle, Fella-Million, and International reggae artists like Luciano and Turbulence..

When put to the test of getting back into calypso, Beat-Down Beats passed with flying colors with every track released. Speaking on his relationship with the young protégé Rancho and his need to keep things local, he is frank and his passion and foresight is evident. “People all over the world have wanted to work with me, but I see the importance of keeping the hotness here at home. With the emergence of Tempo, VI music is put on the same level as everything else. For a while I left calypso music alone, I was feeling restricted and locked in, so I branched off for a minute. The VI music industry has grown a lot in a short time, and has gained more respect for our local artist. I don’t feel the need to try to fit into a mold, I can create freely. The type of calypso I create now is called ‘Raw’-lypso, saying that it is free and unrestricted. The same goes for the reggae and hi-hop that I do now, when I play it for people they can’t tell which it is. It’s free, it’s what ever you want it to be, and it’s just quality music.”

Bosco has not attended any formal training for his knowledge, he was fortunate to learn from the VI’s best entertainers. Teachers like Bolo, Funk, Kelly, and the legend himself, Daddy Friday. So it is no surprise the effect he has on the modern day VI music scene. When asked what keeps him going, Bosco answers, “The massive alone is what gives me the strength, when people say they love and respect what I am doing now and in the past, that’s all I need.”
