Malvern Gumbs is a veteran trumpet player who has traveled with the world renowned Manhattans. As a seasoned singer, Malvern has made appearances at the Apollo Theater in
New York
, performed with the Starlites Band and completed three solo Gospel/R&B albums. In addition to his many accomplishments as an artist, instrumentalist and teacher; Malvern is the CEO of MVG Productions, a recording studio he founded six (6) years ago after studying under Wayne Samuel of Dog House Studios for two (2) years.
MVG has collaborated with artists like Lorna Freeman, Whadadlee and P’your Passion; amassing over 50 productions with various artists throughout the years. Apart from his many recordings, Malvern has produced seven (7) albums three of which were his own. However, his proudest, most notable production is the Soca Spectrum (Vol. I and Vol .II) compilation CD, with volume one capturing the VI Road March in 2006 with the track “Steel Band Comin’ Down Deh Road” and volume two selling out before the end of carnival 2007. In fact, volume one was such a success, Malvern formed a calypso group called the Spectrum Band to compliment the CD.
Malvern credits the name of the compilation CD to Terrance Gumbs another producer for the Soca Spectrum project. When asked about what made the Soca Spectrum CD such a success, Malvern revealed that they “made it a point to match the voice, style of singing and look of the artist to each of the songs”. With all MVG production Malvern says he “tries to get the best out of each artist and gives them ideas in order to do that”. Overall Malvern confesses that “it’s because of the love that I get up and do this everyday. Before the money comes the love has to be there. Being a writer, teacher, singer, producer and father is really hard; time management is very important. I always try to instill in my students to never think anything is good enough; if you know you can do it better, do it.”
